While discussing the new sourcebook, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (terrible name for book BTW) – I greatly appreciate Teos voicing his displeasure about the pilfering of Greyhawk icons to the FR. I really like this show, but I feel sometimes with Shawn working as a contractor for WOTC, there is never enough criticism on products where they are deserved (especially in regards to Dragon+). It is nice to have someone like Teos that actually will pushback and voice faults of WOTC. That is something this show needs more of.
Hi Stephen! I hope you are doing well. Neither of us tries to deliberately be critical of any RPG company. Because we have both worked with WotC over the years so much, we often have seen what it is like inside the company. It is a company like any other, with all the imperfections of any company. It just happens to make the amazing products and game we love. We also try to recognize that of the many RPG companies, it almost always is paying the best salaries and benefits (by far) of any RPG company. I like that a lot. So, we try to balance our criticisms with that understanding of the reality that WotC deals with, and with a consideration of how it compares to others in the industry.
We are also generally positive people. Not that much gets under our skin, and we try to remember that the things that do may be just fine for other listeners. I mean, Greyhawk is one that gets to me… but I can also see the argument that to not use all that lore and all those great ideas would be a shame. Is 5E not better for having used Acererak? Are gamers not better off for it?
I hope that makes sense. I personally will try to reserve criticism for the aspects that really call for it. And, hopefully, in ways that create some thought but aren’t just negative. To me, the ideal criticism takes us forward.
Thinking on your comment more… for sure, we don’t intend to be marketing/PR for WotC. We want to cover news/products in which you would be interested. And we want to analyze the news/products. We aim to be positive, while still analyzing critically based on the merits of the particular item.
