Thanks for answering my question. I appreciate the clarification. That makes complete sense.
In response to my human-centric game, my son’s first game was all non-human. (I went wild and played a gnome.) And it was one of the best games I ever played in: https://rpg.kamander.com/2019/04/mindori.html
Coincidentally, I heavily modified initiative, rolling every round and doubling all initiative modifiers. It’s been working out really well. Here’s my full house rules:

FWIW, a new Hickman / Weis Dragonlance has been announced.
I’m a curmudgeon, no doubt, but I wonder how much of the D&D performance over the last two years, particularly in the digital space, will be sustainable as we recover from the pandemic and people go back to pre-pandemic, in-person activities?
While I have no doubt that people’s isolation during the first two years of COVID did result in an increase in D&D play and consumption in the digital realm, the growth of D&D _before_ COVID was still massive and unprecedented. So while, as they say, “past performance does not promise future returns,” I can definitely contend with strong confidence that 5e will perform better than any previous edition after being on the market for 8 years. I know this is true in some cases where the edition didn’t even last 8 years. 😉
