Hey Folks. It’s time for another episode of the Misdirected Mark Podcast and I have my trusty companion Phil with me as we get into the gameroom, talk about where we think the RPG Industry is headed, and give some of our gamer resolutions for 2015 and would love to hear some of yours.

    Hi Chris,
Your estimate of the size of the hobby is really interesting. I was surprised to hear that DriveThruRPG is a $150 mil in revenue this year. I don’t know how much faith you have in the number but it is worth bearing in mind that DriveThruRPG and Kickstarter are much more important for small press than for the big players. Fred Hicks posted on G+ that only 7% of Evil Hat’s revenue is through DriveThruRPG. I couldn’t find the post but it is quoted here:

You can see there detailed sales breakdown here:

Also IIRC while ICV2 is as about as good data as is available, there are HUGE gaps, things like it doesn’t include Amazon.com or Walmart.

I’m not saying your estimate is too low or too high – I really don’t know – I just think it’s really hard to know with the data that is available publicly.

Thanks, best wishes and keep up the great work,
    Avi

Another RPG that might work for a horror game is Dead of Night. Compared to Dread, I like the more traditional stat-based character creation and the use of dice as a resolution mechanic.

Fantasy Flight also just released the first installment in their The End of the World series in which players play as themselves in various apocalyptic scenarios. (The rules even state that the only items in your inventory are the things you have on your person, and the game begins wherever you are in real life.)

Me and drew smith, secret weapon of the podcast, have been talking about end of the world and those others who are seeing this and interested in that game, the gamerstable podcast is doing an AP of it. They just did characyet creation. I also plan on having drew on to tell folks about the game.
