I contributed to the Kickstarter for 13th Age because I was excited about the prospect of a D&D-esque RPG that was narrative-heavy. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to get anyone else interested, especially since I didn’t feel confident to run it. (I’d never previously run anything.) Ditto Dungeon World (except that I didn’t back its Kickstarter). Since then, I’ve joined a D&D 5e group (which began during the playtest phase), and I’ve even started running a 5e game on the side.

The point I’m getting to is that I’ve basically come to the same realization as you did. I don’t think I’d get anything from either 13th Age or Dungeon World* that I’m not already getting from 5e (with maybe the exception of a couple mechanics I’d borrow for the game I run). 5e is such a wonderfully elegant system with a great focus on story.

*I will say that I kind of like Dungeon World’s use of 2d6 for skill checks. The idea of having more of a probability curve than the flat 1/20 chance provided by the d20 appeals to me. That said, it just wouldn’t be D&D if you weren’t using a d20.
