Point Economies and Mysteries

Hey Folks. This week Phil finds a book, we pull point economies off the wall in the garage, Meta-game gets a discussion, Love Letter gets a look, we delve into mysteries in the workshop, and I saw Captain America but Phil hadn’t so I spoil nothing. I hope you enjoy the show. Also I think our combined sleep for the previous night was eight hours and I got three of them.

I’m only half way into the episode but loving it… Ahhh metagame to not to metagame…

There are tons of different definitions of “metagame,” and the definition with regards to RPGs is going to be different than other types of games. I have used the words “metagame” for probably 30+ years in regards to RPGs, and it almost always refers to the player having knowledge that the character does not have. If they are using that out-of-character knowledge to make their in-character decisions, they are metagaming. The argument always then became whether this use of out-of-character knowledge is good or bad for the game. People who treat RPGs as a game say it is fine, because it is a game. People who treat RPGs as exercises in storytelling say that it is not, because the story is more important than the game to them.

The problem with trying to use the definition that Chris uses is that there is nothing outside of a game that is not part of a game when you are talking about that game. If, in your MTG example, you say that building your deck and thinking about strategies is not the metagame, then nothing is metagame except stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with that game. Going to MTG strategy websites and discussing card prices is part of the game, and not the metagame, because it has a direct effect on the cards that build the decks that drive the game.
