Panda’s Talking Games – 64: Podded by the Apandalypse

Show us how you make Powered by the Apocalypse games shine as one shots and campaigns! Phil and Senda talk running PbtA and what parts make it very suitable for both long and short play. Shockingly, this episode came in pretty short — probably because we recorded very late at night! Milky juice part 2, silly childhood songs, and attack of the Definition Panda with Urban Dictionary…it’s the B show.

Patrons, we have one short clips for you this week: Senda accidentally reads the Urban dictionary definition of covfefe.

Show us how you handle a mistake in your game! Senda and Phil talk mistake magnitude, how fast you catch it, retconning, and just moving on. There’s also milky juice, Phil does not have the clap, milky milk and the funky bunch, this is an A show, and Senda squealed on mics because YOU GUYS LEFT REVIEWS!

Panda’s Talking Games – 62: The 8 Types of Fun

Show us what your favorite types of fun are! Phil and Senda talk through their top four types of fun from the eight kinds of specified and defined fun (Phil defined terms that had been defined — can anyone say Philception?). Smash Man and Skill Monkey buck the ratings to return to their less than adventurous adventures by popular demand. We also invented a new game: MAGICAL POPSPLAIN POWER — MAKE UP!

Panda’s Talking Games – 61: Eli Kurtz and Maps Maps Maps

Show us how you like to use maps in your one shots vs. campaigns! Eli Kurtz (mythicgazatteer.com) joins Senda and Phil to talk maps, coastlines, details, and more! Also, he can SING! Interrupts interrupted by interrupting counter spells.

CORRECTION: Senda referred to a game during this episode as The Last Safe House — the actual title of the game is Bated Breath, by Jacqueline Beckwith.

Panda’s Talking Games – 60: Henchmen, Allies, and Wolves, oh my!

Show us how you use henchmen in one shots and campaigns! We talk allies, animal companions, and henchmen, why you might think of using them, and how you may use them differently in one shots vs. campaigns. Also, Phil looses a piece of his child hood innocence when it comes to peanut butter cups, the temperature changed in the show, we’ve moved on to only Moana parodies, and our percentage for finishing the show continues to be terrible.

Show us how you hack systems vs. create new systems to support genre! PK Sullivan, with many design credits to his name, joins us to talk about magical girls and Manowar, hacking systems for genre, and designing from scratch for genre. Also, sometimes Phil is not prepared, PK sings, Chicago mix, and they made me edit this monstrosity.

Show us how you handle organizing people to come to your game, game day, or convention! Senda and Phil talk some basics about getting people to show up and the ways you can try to trick I mean convince them in to coming. There’s a bit about backing up your game because Senda can’t read and then that one song. You know. That one. Oh, you’ll know it when you hear it.

Panda’s Talking Games – 49: Romance is in the air

Show us how you handle romance in one shots and campaigns! Phil and Senda talk about the story arc of romance and how to use it in both types of games. I couldn’t get the Doubleclicks Will They or Won’t They out of her head (so it’s linked below) and Phil made fun of my sneeze face.

Check out the Doubleclicks at http://www.thedoubleclicks.com! They are fantastic and deserve your ears.

Panda’s Talking Games – 48: Gender

Show us how you play a character of a different gender? Phil and Senda have an awkward conversation about trying to filter societal gender constructs in to some kind of advice for playing NPCs of a different gender than your own.

This was an extremely difficult topic for us to tackle. We’re pretty sure there are people out there who could do this topic with more poise and grace than we did. Inevitably in any discussion of gender we have to acknowledge that gender is a construct of our society, and so anything we throw out is an implant of how we currently live. With that in mind we attempted to be as careful as possible with this topic since it’s very delicate. If you have things to add or the perspective of another gender identity to throw at us in terms of portraying in game, you know where to find us: @pandastalkgames on twitter or panda(at)misdirectedmark.com. Finally, the moral of the story is and always will be: play characters, not genders.

We also learned that Phil speaks hairball.

Panda’s Talking Games – 47: Thoughts on Gaming with your Significant Other

Show us how you handle gaming with your significant other! What if they’ve never played a game before, but want to try? What if they’re an old hand? What if Phil gets really excited about the Scholastic book fair and we end up talking about ice cream?

Super sorry to jystdave and everyone out there who actually knows the shanty; listening back I realized I did the chorus utterly wrong. Someday I’ll have to do it as a fully produced song and fix it, just to make it up to you. Until that day…..well, just know that I was actually going to re-record it but I ran out of time.

Panda’s Talking Games – 46: Low Level Games

Show us how you run low level one shots and campaigns! What kind of games do lower power characters create and play in?

Also, murder bears and a deep dive on sewing with grass, ponchos as military gear, and Tuam. Patreon backers can find their extra outtakes at patreon.com/mmp.
